Many are willing to hire ex-convicts

SmartPulse — our weekly reader poll in Smartbrief on Workforce — tracks feedback from leading managers and HR practitioners. We run the poll question each Wednesday in our e-newsletter.

Last week, we asked: Are you willing to hire ex-convicts for positions in your company?

  • Yes, but we are only willing to do it for certain positions, 35%
  • Yes — we are willing to work with them on a case-by-case basis for any position, 33%
  • We don’t know whether we hire ex-convicts, 18%
  • No, but we have in the past, 13%

I’m always interested in knowing who doesn’t know if they are hiring ex-convicts. I think many HR pros are smart about evaluating the circumstances of any conviction but simply choosing to ignore possible issues is next to criminal itself. One-fifth of you not knowing is an awfully high percentage, especially with the affordability of background checks.
