Much ado about turnover

SmartPulse — our weekly reader poll in SmartBrief on Workforce — tracks feedback from leading managers and HR practitioners. We run the poll question each Wednesday in our e-newsletter.

Last week, we asked: How concerned are you about turnover in your organization?

  • Not concerned about any turnover — 31%
  • Somewhat concerned about certain types of turnover — 30%
  • Very concerned about all turnover — 24%
  • Somewhat concerned about all turnover — 15%

There seems to be a perception that, as the economy improves, companies will see increased turnover. We can debate that all day whether that will impact your organization, but I do find it interesting that almost 7 in 10 people surveyed said they were concerned about turnover. While I think it is admirable to worry about retention in this environment, the only way it is useful is if you measure it in relationship to the people you want to retain. Some turnover isn’t bad turnover, and it is important to recognize that.
