As the new general manager of Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa, Kaleo Kenui is focused on honoring the resort’s storied legacy while positioning it for the future. In this Q&A, he discusses leadership, evolving traveler expectations, technology and the role of authentic Hawaiian hospitality in creating memorable guest experiences.
Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa is one of Hawaiʻi’s most iconic resorts. What are your top priorities during your first year, and how do you balance preserving the property’s legacy while positioning it for the future?
Sheraton Maui has a remarkable legacy that spans generations of travelers, associates and Maui residents. My first priority is listening to and learning from our associates, guests, owners and community partners to ensure we honor what has made this resort so special for decades.
Equally important is positioning the resort for the future by continuing to elevate the guest experience, investing in our people and embracing innovations that enhance service. Preserving our legacy and evolving for the future are not competing priorities. The spirit of aloha, authentic Hawaiian hospitality and our connection to Kāʻanapali remain our foundation as we continue finding new ways to exceed guest expectations and create memorable experiences.

You’ve led both select-service and full-service Marriott properties throughout your career. What lessons from those experiences will be most valuable as you take the helm of a large destination resort?
One lesson has remained consistent regardless of property type: Culture drives performance. When associates feel valued, empowered and connected to a shared purpose, exceptional guest experiences naturally follow.
My experience across different hotel segments has also reinforced the importance of operational discipline, financial stewardship and adaptability. Whether leading a select-service hotel or a large resort, success comes from staying focused on the fundamentals while never losing sight of the people behind the operation. At Sheraton Maui, that means fostering an engaged team culture while delivering unforgettable experiences for our guests.
Maui’s tourism industry continues to evolve following the challenges of recent years. What opportunities do you see for the island’s hospitality sector, and how do you expect traveler expectations to change over the next few years?
Maui has always been much more than a destination; it is a community with a rich culture, history and sense of place. As tourism continues to evolve, I see tremendous opportunities for our industry to deepen connections between visitors and the island in more meaningful and responsible ways.
Travelers increasingly seek authentic experiences, personalized service and opportunities to understand the communities they visit. They want to travel with purpose. Resorts that deliver memorable experiences while supporting local culture, environmental stewardship and community engagement will be well-positioned for long-term success.
Recruiting and retaining hospitality talent remains a priority across the industry. What leadership strategies have been most effective for building engaged teams, and how do you plan to foster that culture at Sheraton Maui?
The most effective leadership strategy is simple: Genuinely care for your people. Associates want to know they are valued, supported and given opportunities to grow.
Throughout my career, I have focused on creating an environment where team members feel heard, recognized and empowered to contribute. Development, mentorship and open communication are critical. At Sheraton Maui, I will continue fostering a culture grounded in aloha, trust, accountability and respect. When associates feel connected to our mission and to one another, they create extraordinary experiences for our guests.
Today’s travelers increasingly seek authentic, locally rooted experiences. How is Sheraton Maui working to connect guests with Hawaiian culture and the surrounding community while maintaining a luxury resort experience?
Authenticity and luxury are not mutually exclusive; they complement each other. Some of the most memorable travel experiences are those that create genuine connections to a destination and its culture.
Sheraton Maui is uniquely positioned to provide those experiences through its history, its people and its location on one of Hawaiʻi’s most celebrated coastlines. We strive to create opportunities for guests to engage with Hawaiian culture, traditions and storytelling while enjoying the elevated service and amenities expected of a world-class resort. Our goal is for guests to leave not only relaxed and refreshed but also with a deeper appreciation for Maui and Hawaiʻi.
Technology continues to reshape hotel operations, from guest service to back-of-house efficiency. Which innovations do you believe will have the biggest impact on resort operations in the coming years, and where do you see the greatest opportunities?
Technology is becoming an increasingly valuable tool for delivering more personalized and efficient service. I believe the biggest opportunities will come from solutions that empower associates with better information and allow them to spend more time creating meaningful guest interactions.
Whether through data-driven insights, enhanced communication platforms or streamlined operations, technology should enhance the human side of hospitality rather than replace it. The future belongs to organizations that successfully balance innovation with genuine personal service. Hospitality will always be a people business, and technology should allow us to make those human connections even stronger.
As someone who has spent much of your career in Maui hospitality, what advice would you offer to hotel leaders navigating an increasingly competitive landscape, and what do you believe will distinguish the most successful resorts over the next five years?
My advice is to remain focused on people, purpose and authenticity. Markets change, technology evolves and traveler preferences shift, but hospitality is ultimately about creating meaningful experiences and relationships.
The most successful resorts over the next five years will be those that invest in their associates, embrace innovation thoughtfully and maintain a strong connection to their community and culture. Guests have more choices than ever before, and what will distinguish great resorts is not only the quality of their product, but the sincerity of their service and the authenticity of the experiences they provide.
For Sheraton Maui, success means honoring our legacy while continuing to create experiences that reflect the warmth, spirit and aloha that make Maui unlike anywhere else in the world.
