Health plan leaders are navigating a complex healthcare landscape. AHIP26, which starts today in Las Vegas, will give leaders the chance to learn, network and come away with knowledge to take these challenges head-on.

SmartBrief spoke with AHIP President and CEO Mike Tuffin to gain insight into the current state of healthcare and learn more about what to expect from this year’s event.

SmartBrief: We’re looking forward to the conference! What’s new or different this year?

Tuffin: Every year, we tailor the conference to the environment and the feedback we receive from our attendees, and AHIP26 is no different. We are streamlining the conference experience into two impactful days to better accommodate schedules and budgets. We have introduced breakfast receptions at the Exhibit Hall on both Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. The traditional evening reception was held last night before the conference began so both attendees and sponsors could enjoy this marquee networking opportunity.

New Peer Connect working sessions will bring participants together in small groups for candid, peer-driven conversations focused on what’s working, what’s not and how organizations are responding to pressures around affordability, technology, coverage and growth. Guided by moderators, these sessions are designed to encourage practical dialogue, real-world problem solving and meaningful exchange among health plan leaders.

Alongside these new experiences, we have curated a sharper agenda — from general sessions to Lunch & Learn peer discussions and 15-minute Quick Impact Presentations in the Exhibit Hall — all designed to deliver actionable insights.

Taken together, these changes create a more focused experience that better serves the needs of our attendees.

The healthcare environment remains complex. How should health plans think about navigating the challenges and opportunities?

Tuffin: Health plans are operating in a market defined by rising medical costs and pressured coverage financing along with layers of regulatory burdens and accelerating technological change. We face significant reputational challenges at a time of intense anxiety about the cost of living and frustration that healthcare hasn’t kept pace with the convenience and simplicity we experience every day in other areas.

We need to build trust as champions for health and advocates for affordability. After all, we are the only part of the healthcare system that focuses every day on keeping coverage and care as affordable as possible. Health plans also need to continue to lead on data interoperability, care coordination and AI-driven administrative simplification while remaining disciplined on evidence- based clinical care and cost containment on consumers’ behalf. Along with the rest of the healthcare system, our industry needs to push through the fragmentation and regulatory barriers to deliver an experience in which consumers are more secure and more empowered.

How will AHIP26 prepare attendees to navigate today’s healthcare landscape?

Tuffin: AHIP26 offers a comprehensive educational and engagement experience tailored to – and responsive to feedback from – professionals from plans across the industry. General sessions set the strategic tone on cross-cutting trends affecting access, affordability and the consumer experience in the commercial market and public programs. Concurrent sessions dive deeper into the challenges facing health plans amid financing pressures, technological developments and active regulatory environments in Washington and the states. Lunch & Learn sessions provide opportunities for focused peer discussions. Quick Impact Presentations in the Exhibit Hall offer targeted, time-efficient insights. Year in and year out, this conference also provides a robust opportunity for industry professionals to network with peers and partners.

What’s the biggest message you want attendees to take away when they leave Las Vegas?

Tuffin: This is a challenging time for all parts of the healthcare system, including health plans. Healthcare costs continue to escalate, coverage financing is under pressure and true digital transformation systemwide remains elusive. At the same time, plans are redoubling their efforts to shield consumers from the full impact of rising costs, and the industry is working together to tackle challenges. Against that complex backdrop, we want every attendee to leave AHIP26 feeling better informed about the trends and ideas shaping the future of healthcare, better connected to the people leading the industry and, ultimately, better equipped to contribute within their organizations.

What are the best tips for first-time attendees to maximize their conference experience?

Tuffin: Start by downloading the AHIP26 mobile app and reviewing the agenda before you arrive — and map out the sessions most aligned with your priorities. Make a point to attend the general sessions, which provide strategic insights from senior leaders. Complement those with concurrent sessions tailored to your specific areas of focus. We also really encourage everyone to spend quality time in the Exhibit Hall to see first-hand what partners and competitors are bringing to market. The breakfast receptions are particularly convenient opportunities to connect with innovators on the exhibit floor. While the agenda each year is distinctive and bespoke to industry professionals, many attendees tell us the informal engagement and networking are of equal value.
