SmartPulse — our weekly reader poll in Smartbrief on Workforce — tracks feedback from leading managers and HR practitioners. We run the poll question each Thursday in our e-newsletter.

Last week, we asked: Do you allow alcohol at the workplace?

  • No — we don’t allow it, 70%
  • Yes, but only for special events and parties, 24%
  • Yes, and we don’t really set any limits on it, 5%
  • Yes, and we have clear guidelines, 2%

The main story is that 7 in 10 employers don’t allow alcohol at all in the workplace. While I do think that in certain environments, it works fine to have alcohol allowed (I have had it allowed in a small office before), I think it is still generally the norm and smart policy to have it separated from the workplace. Still, that won’t stop some Silicon Valley firms of partaking for the benefit of their specific company culture.
