Australian schools cope with teacher shortages

Many Australian schools are suffering from teacher shortages, causing them to shift primary teachers into secondary schools and assign teachers to classes outside of their subject areas. The New South Wales Teachers Federation says the shortage is expected to continue as working conditions and other demands force more teachers out of the profession. Also, a report from 2008 showed that about half of New South Wales' teachers will be eligible to retire by 2016.
