ICU bed shortage can raise mortality risks, study shows

A study at 10 French hospitals showed almost 15% of patients referred to ICUs over three months were at least temporarily denied access because of bed shortages. The report in the American Journal of Respiratory & Critical Care Medicine said those patients had a 33% risk of dying in 60 days, compared with a 27% risk among patients who were admitted to an ICU immediately.
