Anticipating funding shortage, Las Vegas schools put a halt to hiring

Las Vegas-area schools still need some 791 teachers for the upcoming school year, but the district has frozen nearly all hiring as it confronts the possibility of having to cut more than $100 million from its operating budget. Existing teachers may be reassigned, including those who work with English-language learners and gifted students, and it is possible that administrative personnel will be required to oversee classroom work, an official said.
