Guidelines recommend PET/CT staging of esophageal cancer

The Society of Thoracic Surgeons has published guidelines covering detection and management of localized esophageal cancer. Endoscopy with biopsy is recommended for diagnosing esophageal cancer. The guidelines also recommend both computed tomography imaging and positron emission tomography as options for staging of locoregionalized esophageal cancer and early-stage esophageal cancer.
