Beating burnout

SmartPulse — our weekly reader poll in Smartbrief on Workforce — tracks feedback from leading managers and HR practitioners. We run the poll question each Wednesday in our e-newsletter and feature analysis from Lance Haun, vice president of outreach for MeritBuilder, the main guy over at and a member of the SmartBrief on Workforce Advisory Board, on this blog.

Last week’s question: Careerealism’s Tai Goodwin recently shared 5 ways to fix burnout. Of her recommendations, which are you most likely to try?

  • Take control of your schedule, 36%
  • Get inspired by an internal or external source, 23%
  • Make a plan to beat your burnout and stick to it, 20%
  • Play a different role in your organization, 11%
  • Talk about your burnout with a trusted colleague, 10%

“While a little over a third of respondents say they want to take control of their schedule to beat burnout, call me just a bit pessimistic on this one. Schedules can seem impossible to tame, and one or two bad days can emotionally drain your commitment to the cause. Still, I am hoping that more people get inspired or make some plans to overcome burnout this year.” –Lance Haun
