Women experience a variety of symptoms during the transition to menopause, including hot flashes, mood swings and sleep disturbances. Almost half use complementary therapies to manage their symptoms and many continue to seek relief. SmartBrief spoke with Pharmavite VP of Science and Technology, Susan Hazels Mitmesser, Ph.D., on how nurse practitioners can help women ease their symptoms with s-equol.

What are the most common menopause symptoms and how do they affect women’s daily lives?

Eight out of 10 women will experience vasomotor symptoms (VMS) during the menopausal transition.1-4  The most common menopause symptoms include hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disturbances, changes in monthly cycles, mood swings and loss of libido as hormone levels fluctuate. Between 40% and 50% of US women have used complementary therapies to manage menopausal symptoms.5-6 A recent Gallup Study of Menopause Management showed there are approximately 21.3 million women who are either “searching for relief” or “coping naturally.”7

Why is EQUELLE® an important supplement for women and when will it be available in the US?

EQUELLE is a non-prescription, non-hormonal supplement for menopausal symptom relief. The active ingredient is S-equol, a unique metabolite that has been researched for more than 20 years and clinically shown to be safe and effective in providing menopausal support, including hot flash relief.† EQUELLE will be available direct to consumer in the US in early 2019.

What is S-equol?

S-equol is a metabolite of the soy isoflavone daidzein, which can be naturally produced in the intestinal tract of some people – mostly, those of Asian descent (China, Japan, Taiwan) – following the ingestion of soy-based products, such as soymilk, tofu and tempeh. It is naturally derived by a patented fermentation process of whole, non-GMO soy germ.

EQUELLE has been available in Japan since 2014, and S-equol has been researched since 1996. Based on decades of research, EQUELLE has been specially formulated to work with the body to help ease menopausal symptoms.

What are some of the most significant clinical findings related to S-equol and EQUELLE so far?

EQUELLE has been clinically shown to help reduce the frequency of hot flashes and muscle discomfort associated with menopause.† Women taking a daily oral dose of 10 mg of S-equol had a reduction in frequency of hot flashes by 58.7% after 12 weeks of supplementation — significantly more than the 34.5% reduction experienced in women receiving a placebo.8
