SmartPulse — our weekly nonscientific reader poll in SmartBrief on Leadership — tracks feedback from more than 170,000 business leaders. We run the poll question each Tuesday in our e-newsletter.

Last week, we asked: How involved are your team members in their annual review process?

  • A great deal — I have them do rigorous self-appraisals: 51.57%
  • Some — I get their input but don’t use all of it: 25.31%
  • Little — they get some input, but the majority is decided by me: 13.52%
  • None — their appraisals are conducted with no input from them: 9.59%

Get their input. While the majority of you involve your people in the year-end appraisal process, a significant number of you don’t. I’d offer that failure to do so is a big mistake. You’re missing out on an opportunity to see their performance through their eyes, which can help you identify development blind spots for them to work on. Additionally, if they have some input in the process, their griping after receiving less than the rating they expected will diminish because you can align expectations much earlier in the process.
