Still finding those positions hard to fill

SmartPulse — our weekly reader poll in Smartbrief on Workforce — tracks feedback from leading managers and HR practitioners. We run the poll question each Thursday in our e-newsletter.

Last week, we asked: Do you have openings at your company that you struggle to fill?

  • Yes, 72%
  • No, 28%

You wouldn’t believe the surprise in people’s voice when I tell them employers still find some positions very hard to fill. The fact is even with high unemployment, there are still jobs that are going to be very difficult to fill. In a previous life, we were constantly on the hunt for helicopter pilots with dual rotor, long-line haul experience. That’s not a skill gap that you can fill by going to a technical school or some on-the-job training. There’s no easy solution for many of these openings either.
