Leadership

SmartPulse — our weekly reader poll in Smartbrief on Workforce — tracks feedback from leading managers and HR practitioners. We run the poll question each Wednesday in our e-newsletter.

Last week, we asked: Washington Wizards player Gilbert Arenas is under investigation for a locker room incident involving firearms. What is your workplace policy on guns?

  • Guns are not allowed into the workplace, 84%
  • We do not have a policy on bringing guns into the workplace, 12%
  • Guns can be brought into the workplace with few restrictions, 2%
  • Guns can be brought into the workplace but only under strict conditions , 2%

Every high-profile incident involving workplace matters often provokes action from organizations. Would it be any surprise if this happened in this case as well? Probably not, but it is still surprising that this many organizations (more than 10%) still have no policy on guns in the workplace. If other high-profile workplace shootings haven’t motivated these organizations from implementing some kind of policy, I have to wonder what it will take to make the change?
