As you know, social media took center stage at SXSW Interactive this week.  Along with a whole host of startups, big boys like Facebook & Best Buy used SXSWi to announce new initiatives. Some of the most interesting stuff happened outside of the spotlight, however, as live social networking is still priority #1 for attendees. SxSWi is the place to connect in person with Twitter friends and rub shoulders with the leaders in this emerging space.

The SX action was in Austin, but where were all these people from? Searching for SXSW in Techrigy SM2, a social media monitoring/analytics tool, yielded over 10,000 results of people talking about the conference on Twitter, Facebook and their blogs in four days! Its geo-mapping capability shows that the majority were from California. Texas was next on the list, with the East Coast not far behind. From there, Massachusetts and New York were also well represented. The map below is pretty cool.
